When the United States gained independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, it felt that God had given it the right to expand westward. For example, after the American Revolution, America's territory extended from the Mississippi River, Lake of the Woods, the Great Lakes, and the Atlantic Ocean (except Florida). Unfortunately, the Mississippi River doesn't extend to Lake of the Woods, and there were many border disputes with British North America (including present-day Canada). Eventually, this escalated to the War of 1812, and the United States and British North America resolved their border disputes via some rivers and the 49th degree parallel north. (Full article...)
